What to expect at the first session :

The first session will cover what you can expect in therapy:

·        how it works

·        confidentiality

·        privacy of information

·        duration of sessions

·        fee structure

·        how records are held;

and anything else that you would like to know before committing to further sessions

 My predominant method of treatment is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). “Cognition” is the psychological jargon for functions of the mind including thoughts, images, dreams and visualisations.  CBT is a here and now action-based therapy.  It is generally short-term and focused on helping you deal with a very specific problem. CBT is an effective evidence-based treatment.   You learn how to identify and change unhelpful thought patterns that have a negative influence on your behaviour.
It is not about trying to analyse, unravel and undo the past. CBT is therefore about working out practical ways of replacing these unhelpful processes with thoughts and behaviours that move you in the direction of achieving a more favourable lifestyle.

Depending on the need of my clients, I also offer Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and EMDR.  ACT promotes the development of greater psychological flexibility and is a form of behavioral therapy that combines mindfulness skills with the practice of acceptance.  EMDR is a psychotherapy treatment which was originally designed to alleviate distress associated with traumatic memories.  See https://www.emdr.com/what-is-emdr/

The initial session is approximately 50 minutes duration where we will explore what it is you would like to achieve from therapy. I will then collect background information, together with significant life events/milestones/factors, that may have contributed to your current situation.  Over the next couple of sessions, we will work together to develop an individualised treatment plan, which will assist you in managing and overcoming the problem.

Follow on sessions are also 50 minutes and, in the initial stages, are normally held weekly.  Thereafter, the sessions progress to fortnightly and thereafter as, and if, required.
